Dad's Coming 1873 by Winslow Homer - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings
This painting is most likely inspired by an event that took place in Gloucester, Massachusetts on August 24th 1873 where a severe storm destroyed 9 fishing boats and claimed the lives of 128 men. The life of a fisherman was always dangerous, and storms and danger were a constant concern for the women and the children left behind. We see a forlorn young woman standing on a beach clutching a baby. Alongside her is a young boy with a straw hat perched on the brow of a moored boat. Both mother and son stare intently out to sea. Homer’s painting depicts an image of waiting and watching; it evokes a sense of dread that Dad may not be coming home.
