Breaking Home Ties 1890 By Thomas Hovenden - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
The 1890s saw the decline of small family farms and the necessity of young sons leaving the land to make a living in the city or on what little was left of the frontier. The scene Thomas Hovenden depicts here had been enacted in many homes, and the composition gave American families a visual record of their own turmoil. At the centre of the composition is the mother bidding farewell to her young son. Her hands rest on his shoulders and she looks into his eyes. Other members of the family, including the family dog, sit or stand around the living room table looking on. Their expressions are forlorn and the mood is somber.
