William Sonntag Snr was an American romantic landscape painter. During the Autumn of 1860 he visited West Virginia; from there he painted this view of the Potomac River. The scene in bathed in a warm Autumnal morning light. The foliage on the trees have changed from green to shades of orange and yellow. Nestled amongst the rocky outcrops surrounding the river we see a small wooden cabin. Also visible are two fishermen sitting on rocks at the rivers edge. They are small in scale compared to their vast environment. The overall mood is one of peace and tranquility.
