Born in Massachusetts, Jerome Thompson, became a painter of vibrant landscapes, often allegorical with rural figures in the foreground. 'Apple Gathering,1856' depicts a rural harvest scene where a closely-knit community of men and women, a boy and girl gather around an apple tree and an apple cart. The overall mood is one of optimism and well being as signified by the bright sunlight, the bountiful apple crop and the carefree, flirtatious behaviour and conversation of the men and women in the painting. The activity suggests equal parts work and equal parts leisure. In the valley below we see a thatched roofed farm house.
