“An Out-of-Doors Study” by John Singer Sargent is a painting about a painting, or more accurately, a painting about the “act of painting.” The subjects of the painting are the French painter Paul Helleu and his wife, Alice. In the painting, the two figures are outdoors under a bright summer day of 1889. Paul is intensely concentrating as he applies paint to the canvas. Alice, being the model, gazes away from Paul. A red canoe and an easel add artistic framing to the two figures.It’s a pein-air-painting and a careful study of an artist at work.
