The painting is dated 17 May 1917, a month after the United States entered the first world war. 'Allies Day' depicts a view down Fifth Avenue in New York City where we see a harmony of proud American, French and British flags flying from sun-touched buildings. The assemblage of abstract shapes is visually striking. The painting relevance lies in the fact that it acts as an expression of patriotism and as a symbol of the new union between three countries - Great Britain, France and the United States - at the time of the first world war.
