Richard Norris Brooke was one of many artists to depict African American life in the 1880s. A Pastoral Visit, is the most celebrated of his genre scenes, or views of everyday life. The painting depicts a family welcoming their pastor to Sunday dinner. According to tradition, the pastor is served first and then after the meal is presented with a cigar box containing the congregation’s weekly contribution and also a fruit wrapped in cloth. The family’s home is rustic but comfortable. Featured in the painting are a sturdy cupboard housing pottery and a fireplace with ornaments on the mantel.
