William Merritt Chase was one of the leading American Impressionist painters. In his painting, “A Friendly Call,” he captured the genteel and privileged life of the societal elite of the 1890s. Set in the artist’s own summer house, the painting shows two fashionably dressed women elegantly chatting. They are in a large room decorated with gilt-framed mirror, hanging textiles, paintings, and prints. The painting is rendered in the manner of French impressionists. But unlike French Impressionism, William Merritt Chase incorporated abstract elements in his subject matter.
