The opponent, an expensively dressed boy, is unaware of the existence of the extra cards. But the audience of the painting can see the cards. There is a sly-looking older man behind the opponent. He is an accomplice of the cardsharp. By peering on the cards of the other boy, he signals to the cardsharp the cards he has. A fine example of Venetian artistry and low-life realism.
