John Varley was one of the founding members of the Old Watercolour Society. One of his large scale watercolour masterpieces is the "Suburbs of an Ancient City." This landscape painting perfectly captures and summarises romantic, heroic and classical themes. It is grandiose in its composition and features monumental figures and classical figures juxtaposed with the looming mountains in the background. A fine example of the watercolour exhibition during the early part of the 19th century.
